Michael Ford started driving for PMTG 11 years ago in 2000. Since that time he has become one of PMTG’s best drivers and one of its best recruiters.

We caught up with Michael by phone one night in Toledo where the air temperature was hovering around 0° F and the wind chill made it feel well below zero. He lives in South Carolina where it was a balmy 32° that night according to his wife. Despite the late hour and the cold temps, Michael was fired up.

Congratulations! You Are One of the Big Winners in PMTG’s Recruiting Makes Cent$ Program for the 4th Quarter of 2011.

Thanks. I think Recruiting Makes Cent$ is the best program in the business. It’s really worked out well for me, the drivers I recruit and PMTG.

I think of the drivers I recruited to PMTG as my team. The current group of guys that I’ve recruited have been with PMTG for two to three years – so if you do the math at a penny per mile––it’s worked out well for all of us.

How Do You Recruit Drivers for Your Team and PMTG?

I’ve got my own process. I meet drivers all the time, at dealers, truck stops, wherever. They see the PMTG truck and ask me about PMTG. What’s it like and so on. I’m looking for drivers that are hungry, that are willing to work, and work hard. They got to want to make money and they’ve got to be willing to make a commitment.

What Do You Do After They Become Drivers for PMTG?

I mentor them. I help them, make sure they are okay, turning the miles they need to turn to be successful. I help them understand how the system works. And I remind them what they need to do to make the money they want.

What Kind of Advice Do You Give New Drivers?

Well, first I try to get to know the driver better. What their goals are.  Then I help them try to meet their goals. But I always tell them: You gotta listen to Dallas. Trust the management at PMTG. They know what they are talking about. I know, I’ve learned over the years.

I love working with Greg and Dallas. I trust them. They listen to me when I have a concern, and then we work it out. The communication is always open. I may not hear what I want to hear but they’re straight with me. And they help me understand.

They ask my opinion: “What can we do better?” I like that. They know we see things and know things and they want to know, too. Together, we are building a championship team.

What Else Do You Like About Working for PMTG?

I love hauling cars, and I know that I am working for the best company in the business. I like how we grow…slowly. That process works. We’ve proven it over time. We don’t try to do too much. We grow moderately every year, but we always grow. I also like that I get to help people who want to do well.

Have You Checked Out the Website Lately? What Do You Think About it?

I check the website every night when I go home. I love it because it’s the future…now. It’s paperless. Using the website, I can see how much money I’ve made and figure out how much more I can make. I find that there’s so much power in information. I use it to my advantage. It’s easy access at your fingertips. We are empowered!
