Congratulations Larry. Thanks for all the miles. Enjoy your well deserved retirement.

After 15 ½ years of driving for PMTG, Larry McElfresh has retired to his 300-acre family farm in Old Fort, North Carolina with his wife, Susan. McElfresh started out his career with PMTG in Okemos, Michigan, then called Greer, South Carolina his home-base terminal before changing to Baltimore. With about six to eight cars on his rig, McElfresh drove up and down the east coast and as far west as Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa.

What Was the Best Part About Your Job?

The way I got treated. I was treated nicely for 15 years. They always treated me good, took my word.

What Was the Worst Part About Your Job?

Time away from home.

What Will You Miss Most About Driving for PMTG?

I enjoyed my work all the way through. I enjoyed hauling cars. I loved driving a big truck late at night, it was less congested.

What Advice Would You Give New Drivers?

We were always in the middle of congestion, all the time. Most important: Don’t get rattled. Biggest Advice: Take your time and do it. When backing up, people will always honk, give you the international sign. Let your assets work for you. Take your time and do your best.

How Has Trucking Changed Over the Last 20 Years?

Lack of pride and responsibility. There is too much attitude of “me first” and “me only” among other drivers. Too many drivers that are uncontrolled, untaught. There is no respect among fellow drivers.

Is There Anybody that You’d Like to Thank or Say Goodbye to?

All of them!  I was friends with everyone, even people I disagreed with. Nobody in the front office ever mistreated me. I was just about treated like a king, ever since I’ve been there.

What Are Your Plans Now That You Are Retired?

I have a 300-acre family farm, keep up with the place. My important work, Granny (Susan) and I get a glass of iced tea and watch the grass grow or watch the river run.

God Bless the whole fleet! I miss them all. Thank you so much and drive safe!
